Working here
People here tend to stay with one installation through its first year, through the first review, and often through the second. The technician who joined for the first ward placements in Manchester now runs the maintenance team in the city, and most people here are measured on whether something is still working years later.
Field and maintenance staff are employed directly, wherever the site is, so the person who repairs something is a colleague of the person who installed it.
Pay is banded and the bands are published internally. Progression is assessed against the band, and the assessment is written down.
Life here

Current openings
We are recruiting a Ward Placement Maintenance Engineer in Manchester (VC-SY-0442), a Somatic Integration Technician and a Cultivation Process Engineer for the Synthetic line at Andermatt and Reykjavik (VC-SY-1180 and VC-SY-0771).
On Unity, we are looking for a Registry Migration Lead in Zürich (VC-UN-1123), a Node Operations Engineer in Toronto (VC-UN-0904) and a Court Scheduling Liaison working between Manchester and London (VC-UN-0655).
Elsewhere: an Oversight Analyst for the Threshold Program at Andermatt (VC-TP-0067), a Propellant Plant Test Engineer at Mojave (VC-MP-0431) and a Civic Deployment Lead in Los Angeles (VC-CV-0158). The graduate programme in systems engineering is open across multiple sites (VC-EC-0010).
Quote the reference when you write to us. Applications go to the programme concerned as well as to recruitment, so the contact form is the whole of the process at this stage.
How we hire
Applying takes a role reference and a short statement of interest, read by recruitment and by the programme you applied to.
Then a technical conversation about a real problem from that programme, with two engineers who work on it.
Then a site visit, where you see the installation and meet the team you would be joining. Expect to be asked what you would change.
An offer confirms band, programme and location in writing, with the start date agreed around the site's outage or qualification calendar.
Graduates and apprentices
The graduate programme places you on a live installation in your first month, with a supervisor and with work that matters. Some of that work is in a cleanroom at three in the morning.
Apprenticeships run at every operating site and are recruited locally. A good number of our senior field engineers joined this way.
